BRUNSWICK HIGH ST.

Ancoats is one of the many ex-industrial hubs of the UK that are reaching a point of change...

Moving from the height of production to the slow decline, it is not long before potential is seen in these urban areas once again. Developers and businesses close in, promising utopian living among old mills and factories.

Despite this change, the industrial memory remains iconic to the existing residents. Local businesses fight to survive in the face of regeneration and relocation projects, but some of which are not so lucky.

Claiming part of the old Brunswick Cotton Mill, this scheme attempts to preserve the history of Manchester’s industrial districts, as well as keeping the local high street format intact. Home to the North West film archive, as well as cinema screens and performance space, it opens a gateway into the past, while Brunswick High Street gives local businesses and amenities a platform on which they can remain part of the area.

It is within this space that residents can reflect on the old, and anticipate the new.
